Anyone owning or anticipating the purchase of an EV should consider how best to charge it. Simply plugging the car in when returning home will get the job done, but the cost can be surprisingly high if that charge is coming from the grid during daylight hours. EV chargers at the lower end of the price spectrum are relatively simple devices with basic functionality to get the job done but little else. The higher end chargers are in a different league altogether – they’re highly sophisticated devices designed to maximise the cost-savings available from appropriate use of off-peak and solar generated electricity.

Investing in a top-line charger, like a MyEnergi Zappi for example, enables charging schedules to be programmed to ensure charging from the grid only happens during off-peak periods (a dual tariff is necessary), or when there’s surplus from a solar PV system. There are numerous other parameters that can be brought to effect, all of which will significantly reduce the cost of recharging an EV. Whilst the initial investment cost of a top-line charger is higher, it will pay for itself pretty quickly, and make life a whole lot easier for any EV owner.
