IMG 7015

Project Overview

Set within a picturesque rural setting, this property underwent a complete renewable energy upgrade to reduce carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency, and future-proof the home against rising energy costs. The project combined solar PV across dual roof aspects, a modern air source heat pump, and a battery storage system with inverter integration.

The installation was delivered collaboratively by:

A Greener Alternative – Heat pump installation
Greener Solar Solutions (by A Greener Alternative) – Solar PV, battery, and inverter installation.

The Solution

Solar PV System (Dual Aspect Design)

Solar panels were installed across both roof elevations, allowing:

  • Maximum energy generation throughout the day
  • Improved performance across varying sun positions
  • Balanced system output rather than reliance on a single orientation

This dual-aspect approach ensures consistent generation from morning through evening, enhancing overall system efficiency.

Battery Storage & Inverter System

A fully integrated battery and inverter system was installed to:

  • Store excess solar energy generated during the day
  • Provide usable electricity during evenings and peak tariff periods
  • Increase self-consumption and reduce grid reliance

The system intelligently manages energy flow, prioritising on-site usage and optimising efficiency.

Air Source Heat Pump

Installed by A Greener Alternative, the air source heat pump provides:

  • Efficient, low-carbon heating and hot water.
  • Seamless integration with the property’s underfloor heating system also installed by A Greener Alternative.
  • Compatibility with the solar and battery setup for maximum sustainability.

By using renewable electricity (often generated on-site), the heat pump significantly reduces the home’s carbon footprint.

Worthing Home

heat pump

The Background

This three-bedroom detached property in West Sussex was providing all heating and hot water requirements via a gas boiler. Looking to do their bit for the environment and with a plan to integrate a new system with Solar PV, the customer opted not to replace their gas system and instead explore the option of a more sustainable alternative in the form of an air source heat pump.

The Solution

A Greener Alternative have designed a system that utilises a single 6kW Midea R290 air source heat pump with a 170 litre hot water cylinder to provide heating to radiators and provision of all domestic hot water requirements. The unit is sited at the side of the property with services running back into the house.

The Midea R290 air source heat pump which is situated neatly at the side of the property extracts heat from the outside air to provide heating and hot water to the home.

The Result

The client now runs their entire heating and hot water system from a state-of-the-art air source heat pump that is not only a more sustainable solution but also means they will never pay a gas bill again! On top of this they will look to integrate a solar PV system that will supplement the running of the air source heat pump further saving them money.

Air Source Heat Pump Large Detached Cascade

f

The Background

This beautiful Grade II listed farmhouse in Kent had a dated oil system that needed upgrading and through discussions with A Greener Alternative various alternative options were explored before deciding upon a cascaded system of two air source heat pumps to provide heating and hot water to upgraded radiators throughout the property.

The Solution

A Greener Alternative have designed a system that utilises two MasterTherm Boxair 7-35kW three-phase air source heat pump units. The units are situated away from the property with services running back to the house via high-quality, insulated underground pipe. Internal works took place to upgrade radiators throughout the property with careful works undertaken to preserve the interior of the home.

The MasterTherm air source heat pumps which are situated away from the property extract heat from the outside air to provide heating and hot water to the home. The heat pumps (pictured above) have been hidden and protected by woven hurdle fencing in keeping with the properties surrounds (picture left) whilst allowing for appropriate air flow for maximum performance of the two  heat pump units.

Air Source Heat Pump House Boat

Untitled 4

The Background

In one of the more unique requests A Greener Alternative were approached by the client to design and install a heating system on a houseboat in Shoreham, West Sussex.

The houseboat is one of the larger permanent residencies on the river and has been converted to provide living space in the form of four individual apartments.

Currently running on oil fired heating, the client wanted to replace this with a renewable heating system that could also utilise the array of solar photovoltaics (PV) sited on the top deck of the boat.

The Solution

A Greener Alternative have designed a system that utilises a NIBE F2040-16kW air source heat pump to provide heating and hot water for the entire boat and its residents. The solar PV array sited on the top deck of the boat generates a supply of electricity that offsets the running costs of the air source heat pump making the system even more sustainable.

The NIBE F2040 air source heat pump sits on the upper deck of the houseboat extracting heat from the outside air and provides heating for radiators and domestic hot water.

A Greener Alternative installed the NIBE F2040 air source heat pump on the upper deck of the houseboat alongside the existing solar PV array. The pipework drops down into a dedicated plantroom into a buffer vessel that supplies a series of radiators throughout the houseboat alongside two bespoke hot water cylinders that provide the domestic hot water.

The Facts

Annual running cost of oil system: £2,130.00

Annual running cost of heat pump system: £1,314.00

Annual fuel bill saving: £816.00
